Who Is God?

So, who is God? There are a lot of crazy ideas about His identity. Lots of people speculate about His character and existence.

But who is He? How can we know who God is?

Pathetic Attempt at Representing God

Some say we are God. As individuals, we are the center of the universe. Because of this, if we "center ourselves," we can "merge with the universe" and become divine.

Others say God is in us. Because of that, we are God. We are divine.

Some say He takes many forms. That's why there are so many religions. It's just God being redundant!

Others say He presents Himself in specific ways, at specific times, for specific purposes.

Some even say He doesn't exist at all. He's just a made-up "crutch" for people to help them along in life. It makes people feel good to have a Being who presides over the universe. So...why not?

So which is it? Who is God? Does He have a plan? Or is He just a myth? Let's find out.

Before we jump in, we ask that you read the whole lesson. There's a fun quiz at the end that will test your knowledge and help you remember the content better. Make sure you take the quiz. It will help a lot.

Who Is God?

Simply put, we find the one, true God in the Bible. Why do we believe this? Here are a few reasons:

  • The Bible reveals God consistently from beginning to end. Across many authors and centuries, Scripture presents the same holy, loving, just, and sovereign God (Exodus 3:14; Malachi 3:6).
  • The Bible records God acting in real history. Its events, places, and people align with archaeology and ancient records, grounding its claims in reality (Luke 3:1–2).
  • The Bible shows God’s character through His works. Creation, covenant, miracles, prophecy, and redemption all display the same God at work (Psalm 19:1; Isaiah 46:9–10).
  • The Bible contains fulfilled prophecy. Promises made centuries earlier come to pass exactly as spoken, revealing a God who knows and directs history (Isaiah 53; Micah 5:2).
  • The Bible centers on Jesus Christ. Jesus reveals God perfectly in a way we could see, hear and touch, experiencing His nature, His compassion, His authority, and His saving purpose in real time (John 1:18; Hebrews 1:1–3).
  • The Bible transforms lives. Across cultures and generations, people encounter the same God who convicts, comforts, restores, and renews (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • The Bible speaks with divine authority. Its words carry the weight of God’s own voice, inspired by the Holy Spirit and profitable for every part of life (2 Timothy 3:16–17).

The conclusion is clear. Understanding who God is begins with recognizing how the Scripture presents Him. So, according to Scripture, who is God?

  • He is the living, personal, eternal Creator who made all things and invites us to know Him (Genesis 1:1; Jeremiah 10:10).
  • He is holy, loving, just, wise, and sovereign who acts, speaks, and relates to His creation (Psalm 145:8–9; Isaiah 6:3).
  • He is not an idea or a distant force but the One who simply IS (Exodus 3:14).

Who Is God in the Trinity?

God reveals Himself as one God in three Persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19). In this context, who is God?

  • He's the Father who plans and initiates.
  • He's the Son who accomplishes redemption.
  • He's the Holy Spirit who applies God’s work to our lives.

This is not three gods but one God, eternally existing in three Persons. He is the Father, Son and Holy Spirit simultaneously but also individually. We don't understand this triunity called the Trinity. What we do know is that there is one God yet three Persons who share the same essence and existence.

The Character of God

The question, "Who is God?" shows that we are searching for someone who can help. So who is He?

When we ask that question, we are asking what He's like. So let's see what He's like. Let's get to know God. To that end, let's go to the only place we know anything about God: His Word, the Bible.

Scripture reveals His character clearly. He is:

  • Holy — utterly pure and set apart (Isaiah 6:3)
  • Loving — the source of all true love (1 John 4:8–10)
  • All‑knowing — nothing is hidden from Him (Psalm 147:5)
  • All‑powerful — nothing is too hard for Him (Jeremiah 32:17)
  • Everywhere present — He is never far from us (Psalm 139:7–10)
  • Unchanging — His character is steady and trustworthy (Malachi 3:6)

These attributes shape how God interacts with the world and with us personally. He is involved. He wants to communicate with us and has in many ways. That's where we'll go next.

How God Reveals Himself

God makes Himself known in ways we can understand. He didn't just throw out ideas and hope that we would get it. No, He did more than that.

It's true. He sometimes communicates in general ways. He also communicates in specific ways. Let's look at a few in both categories:

  • Providence shows God's hand as He guides history and the details of our lives according to His wisdom and purpose (Genesis 50:20; Proverbs 16:9; Ephesians 1:11).
  • Creation displays His power and glory (Psalm 19:1).
  • Scripture reveals His character, promises, and purposes in the most accurate way (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
  • Jesus Christ is the fullest revelation of God, the exact imprint of His nature (Hebrews 1:1–3).
  • The Holy Spirit teaches, convicts, comforts, and guides (John 14:26).

Through these, God shows not only who He is but also how we can know Him. It's true. God left nothing up to chance. He loves us enough to want to speak His mind to us.

God’s Relationship With Humanity

God's Caring Hand

How do we relate to God? We do in one very important way!

God created people in His image (Genesis 1:27). That means God made us special. We are different from the rest of creation. That's the reason why we are so much more intelligent and talented than animals. It isn't evolution. It's the breath of God making us living souls (Genesis 2:7).

The conclusion is obvious. God made us for relationship with Him. In other words, God really does care about us!

Scripture shows God as a Father who knows us, sees us, and invites us to walk with Him (Psalm 139:1–4), much like the first man and woman did (c.f. Genesis 3:8). Jesus describes God as a provider who cares for every detail of our lives (Matthew 6:25–34). He is near, attentive, and compassionate.

If God Is Real, Why Is the World So Broken?

The World Broken by Sin

So if God created us in a special way for relationship with Him, why is there so much evil in the world? Why does it look broken?

Those are good questions with good answers. We've even created a page dedicated to this subject.

Here's the quick answer:

Scripture teaches that evil entered the world through human rebellion against God (Genesis 3:1–19). God did not create evil, nor does He tempt anyone to sin (James 1:13). We human beings allowed sin to enter creation (Romans 5:12). We human beings perpetuate that mistake every time we sin. That's why the world looks like it does.

Yet God allows evil for now because He is patient with the world, knowing it needs His grace to survive (2 Peter 3:9). But that doesn't mean He'll always allow it. He's a just God, so He will take care of evil at some point.

World Being Fixed by God

He promises to judge it fully and finally (2 Timothy 4:1). No one will get away with anything. And He judges it according to the most consistently just standard He can -- His own righteous standard (Romans 2:5–6).

Yet, God is still patient, which sometimes looks like injustice. That's His loving patience, wanting to see people saved from their own destructive sin (2 Peter 3:9). Even in a broken world, God is working to save people (Ephesians 1:7).

Through Christ, He brings healing, justice, and restoration. He will one day fix the world, making all things new (Revelation 21:3–5).

God is real. He is patiently waiting. Is He waiting on you?

So Who Is God, Really?

Asking "Who is God?" should lead us to one conclusion: God cares about us.

He reveals Himself in specific ways, at specific times, for specific purposes. He isn't a random God. He isn't a God who is disinterested in our plight. He's a God who's involved and cares.

Knowing who God is shapes how we see ourselves. He helps us understand the world and how to face suffering, purpose, and eternity. God invites every person to know Him personally through Jesus Christ (John 17:3).

The other important question here is this: Do you know God? I mean, really know Him. If you do, He knows you. If you don't know God the way you should, He doesn't know you (Matthew 7:23).

You see, you can only know God if you approach Him through the Son. That Son is Jesus Christ (John 14:6). If you believe in Jesus Christ through faith, you belong to God (Ephesians 2:8-9).

This is not merely information but relationship. It's the foundation for understanding life, hope, and truth. It's the way to know God. Believe in God today through His Son.

God bless.
