How Can I be Saved?

Maybe you've asked, "How can I be saved? How can I know for sure I'm going to heaven? How can I see God?"

If you've ask any of these questions, you're in the right place! We'll look at what the Bible says about salvation. Then we'll focus on what happens next.

Let's get into it.

How Can I Be Saved?

God’s love and His Son

Cross That Saves

It all begins right here. It begins with God. How so? Let's look.

The Bible says that God loved the world. Can you believe that? God loved His creation. Most of all, God loved the human race that bears His very image!

Unfortunately, we didn't make it easy. As we'll see, human beings rebelled against God. Yet, He loved His creation anyway!

In fact, He loved it so much that He gave His one and only Son. He didn't waste time with cheap substitutes. He sent the real thing. He sent "very God of very God," His Son, Jesus Christ.

What did He do? He died so that whoever believes in Him could avoid eternal death and instead have eternal life (John 3:16). Jesus, the Son of God, came, died, and rose again so that we can be forgiven and brought back to God (1 Corinthians 15:3–4; 1 Peter 3:18).

And here's the coolest part. He did all this before anyone sinned. God created the plan of salvation before time itself (Ephesians 1:4)!

That's how much God loved us. He planned it and then sent the best to take care of it.

Our problem: we have all sinned

Where do we enter the discussion? We have to ask a slightly different question than we began with: "How can I be saved from my sin?"

Why? Why is sin so important to the discussion? The answer is simple. Let's look.

Scripture is clear that all of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Why is that a problem?

Our sin separates us from a holy God. Here's the issue. We can't fix this by our own efforts or good works (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 6:23a).

We're finite beings. That means we're stuck in time like a fly in amber. We can't fix the problem because the problem is an eternal one.

Sin has eternal consequences. We are merely human. The problem is much greater than our ability to fix it.

So we're in trouble if we can't find some way of eternal forgiveness. What do we do? Let's find out.

God’s way of salvation

Here's the greatest news in the universe. We DON'T HAVE to fix it ourselves. God already did that. He did it through His Son, Jesus Christ who fixed the problem and gave it to us as a gift (Romans 6:23).

God tells us that we are saved by His grace, through faith. We don't have to do anything but accept His gift. We could never earn His grace in a million years. It's not something we can earn (Ephesians 2:8–9).

Jesus has done everything needed for our salvation. We are called to receive what He has done by trusting in Him (Romans 5:8).

How to respond to this good news

Cross of Love

The Bible tells us that all we have to do is accept that good gift that God has provided through His Son. Anyone who accepts it will be saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone (Acts 16:31; Romans 10:13).

Responding to the gospel means turning from your sin and calling on Jesus in repentance and faith. Faith always includes repentance. It has to. If you turn to Christ. You're turning your back on everything you were, including your sin. This is the working definition of repentance!

In other words, you're abandoning yourself to Christ alone (Matthew 16:24–27). You're trusting Him alone to save you (Mark 1:15; Romans 10:9–10). It is not a special set of words that saves. It's committing your life to Christ Himself (John 1:12; John 6:37).
