Why Do Bad Things Happen?

How Do I Control Myself

We all ask this question sooner or later. Why do bad things happen? I mean, where could all this grief have come from? And if there is a God, why doesn't He take care of it?

Those are the questions we'll seek to answer in this study. They're too important to ignore. And they're too important to get the answers wrong.

Before we do that, this is another Bite-Sized Bible course. We offer a number of these, with many more coming (Lord willing!). You can access the catalogue of courses here.

Also, each lesson has a quiz with it. Make sure to take the quiz. It will really help you remember the content better.

After all...

God tests us so that we can learn things (James 1::2-3). Testing ourselves in what God says is important, too. So make sure you don't skip the quiz.

Now, let's try to figure this out. Why do bad things happen?

What Does the Bible Say About Why Bad Things Happen?

Which Child Are You?

Let's summarize this topic before you get into the course. This will help you understand what you're getting into a little better.

The Bible doesn't give one shallow answer to every kind of suffering. Instead, it shows us that God made the world good (Genesis 1:31). But something happened. Sin entered God's perfect creation (Genesis 3:1-7). This produced the situation we find today.

People act badly. They act badly toward God. They act badly toward each other. Humans are very efficient at...well...being sinful.

People can't get along. People riot when they don't like something. There are upticks in divorce. Murder continues to rise. War proliferates. Disease spreads. Weeds grow.

What caused all this? The answer is simple.

These are all consequences of sin entering through Adam (Romans 5:12–21). It's not a pretty picture.

Humans know how to rebel (Romans 5:12). As a result, human hearts produce real evil (Mark 7:20–23). All this leads to sickness and sorrow, which are a common part of life in a fallen world (Romans 8:20–23).

This short Bite-Sized Bible course walks through those truths step by step. We are not trying to answer every painful question people may have. We do want to see clearly what Scripture says and how it helps us think about evil, suffering, and hope.

In This Course

Lesson 1: Where Did Evil Come From?

We begin at the beginning, where the Bible shows us that God made creation good and that evil entered through rebellion against Him. The truth may surprise you.

Find Lesson 1 here.

Lesson 2: Why Do People Hurt People?

Next, we look at moral evil and the sinful heart. Much suffering in this world comes from what people choose to do. We may not want to face this reality. But it's a side of ourselves we need to see.

Find lesson 2 here.

Lesson 3: Why Do People Get Sick?

In our final lesson, we consider sickness and physical suffering as part of life in a broken world. It's important to remember that not every illness is tied to a specific personal sin. Sin certainly brought that suffering. That doesn't mean all sin has a personal cause behind it.

But a final word first.

Why Try to Answer Why Do Bad Things Happen?

Here's the simple truth. We all want to know. Everyone tries to answer this question with whatever resources they have on hand. Too many people get the answer wrong.

And there's only one right answer.

If we view the issue of pain and suffering from God's perspective, everything makes sense. There's no other way to handle it. The Bible's view of "bad things" brings everything into focus for us.

It also does something even more important. God's perspective on this allows us to view ourselves more accurately. If we see ourselves as sinners, living in a sinful world, we understand we have a problem we can't fix.

That sends us searching for the solution. The solution can only be found in one place. Or more accurately, it can be found in one Person.

Jesus Christ.

Although Christ didn't immediately remove all the consequences of sin, He removed the most important one. Separation from God. Eternal suffering. Hell.

No matter what kind of suffering we endure here, it doesn't compare to the suffering Jesus saved us from in eternity. Jesus came to take care of the sin curse.

One day, that task will find full completion in Christ. For now, we suffer. One day, we celebrate.

What a day that will be. God bless.
