Let's hit the ground running with this discussion. What is the best Bible dictionary for your study time?
A Bible dictionary is more than a reference book. It’s a gateway into the world of Scripture.

Bible dictionaries explain people, places, customs, and theological terms. These resources help readers grasp the richness of God’s Word.
Unlike commentaries, which interpret passages, dictionaries provide definitions and background that illuminate the text. They bring color to a text that we may see as black-and-white. In short, Bible dictionaries fill in the knowledge-blanks of our minds.
If you need quick information, we've created a Best Bible Dictionary Chooser widget to help. We've also prepared a widget to help you apply this to the PEEL method of Bible study.
Otherwise, we have all the information you need below.
These cover a wide range of topics. They offer accessible entries on biblical names, geography, and key themes. They are ideal for everyday study and quick reference.
These are perfect for the beginning student. But don't think this is only for beginners. Bible dictionaries can benefit anyone. I'm a pastor and use these quite often.
Focused works dive deeper into specific areas such as theology, archaeology, or original languages. Hebrew and Greek word dictionaries, for example, help uncover the meaning behind key terms.
These are better for advanced students. With that said, anyone can use these. I like these to help me fill in information I'm not familiar with.
For ministries committed to doctrinally conservative perspectives, certain dictionaries emphasize traditional interpretations and align closely with historic Christian teaching.
In this discussion, we'll deal more with the general resources. With that said, dominantly Reformed, Methodist or Baptist resources do exist.
Which one is the best Bible dictionary for your needs? You'll need to choose based on what you're doing.
If you want to flesh out a big idea, use a general Bible dictionary. If you want to drill down on a certain word or idea in a text and get all the details, use a specialized dictionary.
Remember. The best Bible dictionary is the one you'll use the most. It simply depends on your needs.
Maybe start with a general dictionary. Later, you may need more specialized information. Invest in a good specialized dictionary to get the most out of a text.
Whatever the case, get the best Bible dictionary for your needs. Find a good one and stick to it.
Here's where we need to get specific. There are so many Bible dictionaries out there. Which should you choose? Which one is the best Bible dictionary for your needs?
Let's look at a few examples.
To get the most out of a Bible dictionary, you need to get one that is trustworthy and helpful.
Here's a good one. The Holman Bible Dictionary. I use this one quite a bit when I need quick and easy information fast. It's a go-to resource and one of the best Bible dictionaries.
Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary is another I've used for quick information. It offers many of the same features as the Holman Bible Dictionary. If I can't find it in Holman, I look here.
Specialized works include The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology (NIDNTT). As the title implies, this volume focuses on theology. This one is most helpful if you're trying to dig a little deeper so that you can get more out of a certain topic.
So which one is the best Bible dictionary for you? Once more, (I sound like a broken record), what do you need?
Are you a beginner? You may prefer a basic illustrated edition like Nelson's. Are you more advanced? You may benefit from a meatier volume like NIDNTT. Many are available in both print and digital formats. I use several of these volumes in the Logos Bible Software format.
So you've found the best Bible dictionary for your needs. How do you use it?
We're glad you asked!
It's as simple as that. Your best Bible dictionary can become a powerhouse resource if you let it!
